Summer Placement at McSherry Halliday

I started my placement here on the 1st July 2021 after graduating from Glasgow Caledonian University with an honours degree in Law and Risk Management. Studying during the pandemic was a challenge as not being able to study with class mates and see my lecturers face to face presented new challenges to an already difficult course. Despite this, I enjoyed my time at GCU and was able to gain a good understanding of the legal system in Scotland.

Once I had graduated from GCU, I began to search for a placement for the summer months before starting my Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. When I learned that I had been accepted for a summer placement at McSherry Halliday I was ecstatic as I knew I would gain an insight into the inner workings of a Law Firm and learn skills that will help me build a career in the legal sector.

My time here has been wonderful so far. I have had the opportunity to sit in on client interviews, draft up emails and letters to clients, record attendance notes, answer and transfer phone calls, arrange appointments for clients and upload documents to case files on the LawCloud. I particularly enjoy answering the phones and talking to clients and other staff members. However my favourite aspect of the job is the client interviews as by listening to the process, I am learning the appropriate questions to ask when speaking to a client as well as the different situations that can arise in various areas of the law. Everyone at the Firm is friendly and accommodating and I am learning a lot from observing and assisting with what I can.

McSherry Halliday has provided me with an excellent opportunity that will prepare me for the next steps in my journey to becoming a solicitor. As the Firm provides a large variety of legal services, I am able to experience different types of law first hand. I am learning something new each day as a result.

I am very happy to work for McSherry Halliday and will miss the Firm when I complete my placement at the end of August.
